Flavian Labs

Flavian Labs is a small skincare company in San Diego, started by a physician. We develop topical formulations built around naturally derived flavonoids. Our first product is for thin, fragile, easily damaged skin.

About

Flavian Labs was formed in 2026 to do one thing carefully: take a class of plant compounds with a long record of supporting healthy blood vessels, and put it to work in a well-made topical product for fragile, damaged skin.

Flavonoids are not a new idea. They are among the most studied natural compounds in the world, with decades of research on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vascular effects, and a history in medicine that reaches back to the 1930s. Flavian Labs was started to bring that science to the skin.

The science

Flavonoids are a family of compounds that plants make to survive sunlight. They absorb the most damaging ultraviolet wavelengths, neutralize the reactive oxygen that light generates, and were among the first chemical defenses plants evolved when they moved from water onto land. They give citrus peel, buckwheat, berries, tea, and cocoa much of their color, and they are a large part of why those foods keep appearing in studies of long-term health.

Their story in medicine begins with blood vessels. In 1936 Albert Szent-Györgyi, a year before he won the Nobel Prize for his work on vitamin C, reported with his colleagues in Szeged that a substance from citrus peel reduced the fragility and leakiness of blood vessels. They named it vitamin P, for permeability. It turned out not to be a vitamin at all but a mixture of flavonoids, and flavonoid preparations such as rutin, diosmin, and hesperidin have been used ever since to support the strength, tone, and integrity of blood vessels.

In skin, flavonoids do several things at once. They are potent antioxidants: they scavenge free radicals, bind the trace metals that generate them, and protect the lipids of cell membranes from oxidative damage. They calm inflammation by quieting the signaling pathways that drive redness and irritation. And in laboratory studies they support the skin's structure, stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen and hyaluronic acid, inhibiting the enzymes that break collagen down, and supporting the lipids that make up the skin barrier.

When skin becomes thin, whether from age, sun exposure, or other causes, the blood vessels beneath it lose their cushion and become more visible and more easily disturbed, while the skin itself loses the collagen and lipids that keep it firm and intact. Our approach is to bring flavonoids to the skin in a formulation that supports firmer, smoother, and healthier skin over time.
